Mass Balance Workshop 2012 in Tarfala, Sweden

Workshop on Measurement and Uncertainty Assessment of Glacier Mass Balance
9–11 July 2012, Tarfala, Sweden

The workshop was organized by the WGMS in collaboration with Stockholm University and built on the results and experience of earlier workshops in Tarfala (1998) and Skeikampen (2008). The workshop focused on the re‐analysis of glacier mass balances including a (standardized) uncertainty assessment. Its major goals were to discuss methods and related uncertainties of mass balance measurements from the ground, air and space, as well as to provide best practices for the homogenization, validation and re-calibration of (long‐term) observational series. The workshop brought together representatives of the leading research groups currently working on these issues. As an output of the workshop, a joint peer-reviewed publication is in preparation and will be made available as soon as ready.

This workshop was a “A Marcus Wallenberg Symposium” sponsored by the Marcus Wallenberg Foundation for International Cooperation in Science and co-sponsored by the International Union of Geology and Geophysics (IUGG) through the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS) as well as by the International Glaciological Society (IGS).

A report on the workshop was recently published in ICE: Nussbaumer, S.U., Jansson, P. & M. Zemp (2012): WGMS workshop on measurements and uncertainty assessment of glacier mass balance, Tarfala, Sweden, 9-11 July 2012. Ice, News Bulletin of the International Glaciological Society, 160 (3): 25-28. (pdf)

Based on the workshop, a joint paper was published:
